300 Spartans Movie is a website dedicated to the Spartans featured in the film and in history. 300 was released in early 2007 and the public immediately embraced the epic tale of the Greek Warriors named Spartans who stood against insurmountable odds, and died valiantly. Stuff of myth, you say? Well you would be right. Many myths deal in self-sacrifice and great deeds, however the Spartans actually existed, and actually stood against all odds. This is what makes “300” so fascinating, its based on fact, and the history has become a legend.
Of course many liberties have been taken in the film adaptation, but the film still holds kernels of truth. For Instance, The Spartans were one of the world’s first privatized armies. Up to that point most Armies were raised from volunteers who held normal jobs as farmers or bakers. Additionally, the shield and spear fighting style that was highlighted in the film was actually developed and used by the Spartans in history, and many consider this style of combat instrumental to the longevity of the Roman Empire.
In the film, the actors are adorned with nothing but a red cape, however this is more attuned to dramatic film making then truth. In reality the warriors would have worn bronze armor, and although they would have all been in great shape, it would not have been an army of sculpted models running around with spears. We have to forgive creative license if we are to be entertained by fact turned legend, but never loose site that this event occurred, in reality, thousands of years ago.
